On the 11th of March, AQPE celebrated a new webinar inside the “Professional Engineer Series”, focused on the exposure of the certification. On this occasion, the event had outstanding guests like Francesc González (AQPE’s CEO), Marta Reina (industrial engineer, manager of ICAI and technical secretary of AIPE), Marta Gómez (forestry engineer and co-director in AdEdMa), and Jacobo Archilla (ICAI engineer certified by AIPE, head of components engineering in Cofrentes).

The event started with the participation of Francesc González, who focused his intervention on exposing the certification, by talking about its three levels (for engineers of all levels of experience), and also highlighting their will of walking by the side of engineers since their graduation towards the consolidation of their professional careers. At the same time, he explained the necessity that engineers have to certificate their competencies, due to the new professions that are appearing nowadays, like Body Parts Maker or Clean Meat Producer. In front of these new professional realities that we are dealing with, the experience and knowledge move to a secondary plane, and companies focus on searching for competent engineers that are able to accept these new challenges.

Finally, he remembered the fact that both AIPE and AQPE are part of the European association of competencies certification for engineers, ENGINET, in a coalition with the Portuguese, French, Italian, Dutch and English agencies, to facilitate the international mobility between certified engineers.

Next, Marta Reina talked about the value of the certification from the point of view of the Professional Engineers Association of Spain, an institution created to augment the trust of society towards engineers. AIPE clusters associations of engineers of a different kind, like industrial, agronomical, ICAI, naval, civil, mine, and forestry ones. Marta spoke about the alliance between AIPE and AQPE for one common objective: creating a unique seal on the certification of competencies for engineers, based on the UK-SPEC and ISO 17024 norms. The competencies that they examine are grouped into 5 categories: optimization of the application of technology, analysis and solution of engineering problems, leadership and commercial and technical management, interpersonal abilities and compromise with professional standards. She also talked about the main benefits of the certification, like the distinction of those engineers who continue studying and acquiring competencies even after they finish their stay in School, or the facilitation of the exercise of the profession in other countries.

Thereupon, Marta Gómez explained to us how she has been able to take advantage of the benefits that the certification brings, on her consultancy and engineering AdEdMa. Some of the aspects that she highlighted were the boosting of the value of her professional career to participate in larger-scale projects, the demonstration of her competencies with the international guarantee of AQPE, or the validation of her technical specialty with objective criteria. Some of the situations that Marta has been able to use the Professional Engineer seal are budget plannings, public tenders, or any document that she drafts as an engineer: projects, certificates of new constructions, or ordination plans, among others.

Some of the projects that Marta has used the seal on have been the provisional urbanistic usage for a concert of 3.000 attendees, the construction of a fire protection barrier for a residential urbanization, or the license for an optical fiber installation in Teruel and Castellón.

At the end of the meeting, we counted with the participation of Jacobo Archilla, an ICAI engineer certified by AIPE, who works as the head of components engineering in the nuclear plant of Cofrentes. Jacobo focused his intervention on highlighting not only the projects that the certification may help him to obtain, but the value of the monitoring done by AIPE on the way for his professional growth as an engineer.

Jacobo exposed how the certification has helped him in this regard, because it encourages engineers to follow a Continued Professional Development. Year after year, AIPE monitors aspects like his education (conventional or non-conventional), his participation in engineering forums or the realization of presentations, his contributions to the general knowledge of engineering, and his professional activities. Besides that, he is encouraged to create a short, mid, and long-term future plan, to create objectives for all the stages of his career. In this regard, Jacobo highlighted how the certification has helped him to obtain larger fees and ascend to a level of higher responsibilities on his job, besides guiding him on the identification of his strengths and weaknesses, giving him the courage to take action to reinforce his competencies and keep growing as an engineer. At the same time, the certification shows his concern about his professional development, his planning towards the future of his career, and his will to consolidate his strengths and improving upon his weaknesses. Jacobo explains that all these aspects will help him greatly in searching for a future job.

On this webinar, we could learn how the Professional Engineer certification has turned into a resource of great value for the career of engineers. Not only for the recognition and validation of their competencies for achieving new and better projects, but for their professional and personal growth.
