“Competence” is understood as the ability with which knowledge and skills are applied in order to achieve the intended results.

The AQPE offers engineering professionals a professional certificate with a system inspired by the Anglo-Saxon model, in accordance with the ISO 17024 people certification standard, which guarantees criteria of impartiality, independence and technical competence to carry out the professional certification.

Professional certification is a globally widespread way of ensuring that professionals have minimum competencies endorsed by an independent entity through an appropriate and impartial certification process.

The certification is made in a field (and if desired, also on a specific sub-field) that correspond to the fields of professional engineering practice (see Fields ).

Who can be certified

The applicant must possess an official university degree in engineering from:

  • Technical engineer
  • Degree in Engineering
  • Engineer
  • University Master's degree registered in the Registry of Universities, Centers and Titles

The degrees obtained in any university school in the national territory, legally recognized, will be accepted. For those degrees obtained outside the national territory, it will be mandatory to have the degree approved or recognized according to the terms defined in Directive 2005/36.

Professional Certificate Categories

Depending on the professional experience since obtaining the degree, as well as the level of competence, there are 3 possible categories:

  • Professional Engineer.- minimum 4 years of professional experience.
  • Senior Professional Engineer.- minimum 8 years of professional experience.
  • Professional Engineer Expert.- minimum 16 years of professional experience

The process

In a first phase, the applicant must send the application and the documents that justify compliance with the requirements. Once verified, there is a second phase of face-to-face evaluation, which consists of a Professional Review Interview.

AQPE certifications are renewed every 4 years, so to ensure that a professional keeps their knowledge and skills up-to-date, they are required to demonstrate (through ongoing training, professional actions, etc.) that they continue to be trained.
